Healthy Teeth Healthy Life

Oral Health is very important to the overall health, well being and quality of life. A healthy mouth enables people to eat, speak and socialise without pain, discomfort or embarrassment. With the increase in teenagers drinking soft drinks, sport drinks and bottled water, has a greater impact on their oral health with the increase of dental disease. Oral piercing and behaviours that contribute to dental erosion are particularly prevalent in this group.

During sport seasons dentists can’t emphasise enough about the importance of wearing mouthguards. Mouthguards minimise the risk of broken teeth, and injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth. They also reduce the risk of jaw fractures and concussion.

Recently, it has been found that there is an increase in the number of children 0-5 years of age who suffer from dental caries. It is advised to either attend a dentist for a check up or ask the family doctor when examining the child for any other reason to lift the lip and have a look at his/her teeth to see if there is any decay present, then either refer to the School Dental Service or private dentist.

It is vitally important that people visit a dentist for a general check up and clean every six to twelve months. By doing this you can get to any decay that may have started since the last visit and fix it before the problem becomes much bigger, more time consuming, more expensive and perhaps the loss of teeth. When you start to feel pain, it generally means you have a much bigger problem than if it was seen to before it became painful, hence the importance of regular checks. It is also important to have your teeth cleaned regularly to prevent plaque from building up and causing gum disease. Quite often people don’t suffer from tooth decay, but lose teeth due to gum disease.
